I think this is the thread. Davis Cup. I'm watching Canada vs Croatia. I wish Vasek had not played the first rubber. He is fresh off winning a challenger and is back in the top 100 but he was ill by the time he arrived in Croatia. He lost in 4 sets to Coric. Denis is on now against Vicktor Galovic. They are playing on indoor clay.

In Australia vs Germany they are tied at 1: 1 with Kyrgios winning his and Sascha winning his.

Normal Davis Cup 2018

Post by ph∞be Fri Feb 02, 2018 5:21 pm

And Denis is up 2 sets to love. He is such a joy to watch- keeps coming forward even on clay. Of course it is indoors so a bit different.

Just watched Vasek's interview. He is so sad right now. Following him makes me so aware of the sacrifices and discipline required from all these young people. Hope he feels better soon. He has to play in the doubles tomorrow.

And Denis is through in 3. So they are 1:1. Great match from him.

Sigh. It was a tough, tough loss for the Canadians Nestor and Vasek in the doubles: they were up by 2 sets and a break and Nestor got broken back serving for 5-2 in the third. Marin and Dodig were on the other side and seems like Marin just took 2+ sets to wake up!!

Tomorrow is going to be a clash of the Next Gen- Coric vs Denis.

Sorry for Great Britain. And Canada, with "our" Denis, almost losing the tie (Croatia 2 sets to 0).

Well- good learning experience for Denis. I feel very bad for Vasek especially. I hope he doesn't let it get him down because he has been on a bit of a comeback trail.

A bit of a tough loss for the Canadians. It just wasn't their day, it seems! I too hope that Vasek won't take it too hard. He is a capable player and would like to see him come back to form.

Italy win over Japan... Unreal effort by Fognini!   Thumbs up

... Despite three court violations over the 3 days, but that's only one per 4 hours on the court, not bad... he will never change!   Laughing

Germany in the QF's: Zverev defeated Kyrgios in straight sets on day 3 to hand Germany the tie over Australia.

Off-court: Tsonga didn't play due to injury, but the entire family was there to support the team and see France win. How sweet! Love it

Jo's son looks a lot like his mother. So sweet the video. I saw them a moment at the crowd, just behind the players.

I am sad I did not watch Fabio. I was going from one tie to another, I heard just the anthems, beautifully sang. Knowing what Fabio did, I like him even more.

I was watching Great Britain, the young Morrie (his name?).

I just finished my recording of the Denis/Borna match. It was an interesting match to watch. I think it would have been different if Denis had gone in playing with Canada 2-1 up. Interestingly, Frank Dancevic (the new DC captain) said that the court had been watered a lot to slow it down and was playing slower than the previous days. But, Borna played really well- up at the baseline, trying to stay aggressive. Denis never gave up- even in the last game. But, too many unforced errors. Still good match.

Looks like Davis Cup will be no more starting in 2019:

This is big news, Steerpike!  Thank you for posting it.  Smile

A one-week 'World Cup of Tennis' will be welcomed, I think. I posted another article from AP News and the official ITF Press release in the General Tennis News thread.
