About the interview- there is a part where Roger is asked if he has ever eaten grass (à la Djokovic at Wimbledon) and he says, 'in a transcendental sense at Stuttgart first round'. I think he means when he got beaten by Haas! Laughing

Thanks for posting the interview. The Google translate is too funny, but you get the gist.

Glad you enjoyed it.  The French version works the best through google translate, not withstanding I have a working knowledge of that language.  German, is just really funny with google translate, no matter what is being translated.

Author's twitter:
https://twitter.com/65Schmid

Here are the links to the three versions from his twitter.  The order is German, Italian and then French, but evident by the language of the last two tweets.

He has done a few translations for us via twitter

Brian Camerlengo also gave translations of a few pieces as well.  His twitter gave me the heads up to the article originally.

Roger was interviewed by Aljazeera-Balkans in Halle.  (23:44 video)
http://balkans.aljazeera.com/video/oni-pobjeduju-roger-federer

Footage of warmup there, some PC, then the interview which starts at about 5:40.  Conducted in English  (The first part was apparently in Bosnian) with Momir Jelovac as the interviewer.

Talks time off / comeback, players including Nadal, Djokovic, managing emotions/head etc early on, milestones, idols/favourite players, his coaches and what they brought (Carter, Roche, Seve, Ivan, Paul, Stephan, Lundgren, Pierre as well), legends watching him play, playing Roddick at W for record, his children, daily routine when not at tournament, not switching racquet earlier (easier, aggressive tennis), what is important now - (NOT ranking)  Nothing really new or earth shattering, but nice nonetheless.

Here's the translated French one, exvuse me for not putting all the Qs in bold- too long!

And it was snails not slugs!

I loved the bit about the weight goes first to his belly- I have noticed:D

King Roger: He's at the table

Gourmet Roger Federer appreciates not only the good tables, but also likes to talk about food. He tells us his tastes, his strangest dish. But also his family, music and his cult movies.

Roger Federer (35) gives up to a hundred press conferences a year: he speaks before each tournament, after each match, during the meetings with the sponsors. It is therefore understandable that it limits individual interviews exclusively. So when he's willing to accept one, it's time to grab the ball. "Can you be in Zurich tomorrow at 10 am?" Asked his manager Tony Godsick by SMS the day before at 11:50 pm And so we took the opportunity to ask him questions that Do not only revolve around tennis.

Roger Federer, we meet on a Saturday morning. Are you in a bad mood in the morning or already in good shape?
Over time, I get better. This morning I was a little tired, it's true, because we went out to have a good meal last night. And returned late. Besides, I had to pack my bags.

You make them yourself?
(Laughter) I would say that it is a collaboration. Mirka handles most of it and I play the role of the supervisor.

Would you like to spend half an hour talking about, above all, food and cooking?
Talking about food, it suits me perfectly. I love eating. But as for cooking, including cooking myself ... Ouch, ouch, ouch! I am not good at all in this area. Maybe because I've always been very lucky in my life: Mirka is a very good cook. When I lived in a roommate with Yves Allegro, Sven Swinnen or Michi Lammer, I was still the assistant. So I'm going to have a hard time talking about cooking for half an hour. I am afraid that you will not be able to get to the bottom of your questions.

In recent times, you have been engaged in activities such as hiking or swimming. It would be logical enough that you also start cooking!
Of course I would be interested. But right now, I do not have time. Cooking should not be stressful. When my career is over, I may very well consider cooking from time to time. Making a good meal in the evening is, for Mirka and me, the occasion to disconnect when the children are lying down. Luckily, we travel a lot around the world, which allows us to often taste new dishes. I like to adapt to local customs: in Asia I eat Asian, Italian, Italian, etc.

So you eat a lot of fish and chips when you're in Wimbledon three weeks?
I try to vary. In Italy, I really like to eat mozzarella di bufala but, of course, it is not possible all the time. Otherwise, one day, I'll be able to roll on the court (laughs).

You have to pay attention to your line?
Today more than yesterday, it is certain. I do not train as much as I used to, but it's not necessary anyway. The important thing is to train well to stay healthy.

Where do you get the most weight easily?
Perhaps at the level of the belly? (He shakes his head) And again!

The last time you went shopping?
It has been a long time. And it's a shame, because I like to go to the supermarket. We will always do some shopping before a hike ...

... to buy a policeman?
No, rather a cervelas or chipolatas, children appreciate them very much. Especially because you have to grill them longer.

Have you ever eaten insects?
Insects, no. But sea urchins, yes. I dare eat everything in the best restaurants in the world. Before, it would have been harder, I was vegetarian.

Really?
Yes, it's true. In junior tournaments, we did not always use very good meat, so I gave up willingly. Until my 16 years. In 1998, I joined the Swiss Davis Cup team for the first time. It was against the Czech Republic. We were in a steak house, ordered rice and salad. Marc Rosset thought I was joking. "Frankly, Roger, it's a steak house here, you can not eat that greenery!" So he ordered ten small pieces of different kinds of meat. I really enjoyed half of it. Since then, I have been replacing meat. I discovered the fish rather thanks to Mirka.

"
I can not eat mozzarella everyday. Otherwise we could roll on the court »
What was the strangest thing about your plate?
It was in Paris. I was ready to try anything, even the frog legs and snails. I could not believe I was going to dare. I remembered the snails with which we often played on the way to school. And there they were on my plate, and I felt my stomach gurgle. But with the sauces, I could eat them. The garlic sauce is particularly high, the taste of the snail is not much felt.

Have you ever eaten with Daniel Humm, the best chef in the world, in New York?
Yes, I know Daniel very well. It's been a long time since I wanted to eat at his home at Eleven Madison Park. But it is not a meal that is dispatched in an hour. An entire organization hides behind. When we phoned, the receptionist thought it was a joke.
According to her, Daniel Humm was one of my great admirers, and it was impossible for Roger Federer to call him in person. When I entered the restaurant, he watched me from his kitchen and did not believe his eyes. Then he set to work. It was a great experience. Then we discussed until 2 in the morning. It also has another restaurant, the NoMad, in which I like to go.

Do you drink wine while eating?
Yes, most of the time. This is part of a refined meal.

Who tastes wine?
Mirka. She knows how to differentiate aromas and perfumes. It recognizes the nuances. She has a good nose. Me, I say rather if I like it or not. So I'm glad that she takes care to check if the wine has a corky taste. I could also do it if necessary ... but I am a little worried about the pressure of the group.

Are you collecting anything other than trophies?
Ah, there you go! Looks like you've run out of food ... (laughs). In the past, we helped my father collect stamps and creme covers. One day he sold everything.
I have long collected the accreditation badges that I wore during the tournaments. But today, this is no longer as interesting because they take a picture of me somewhere on the Internet. Before, the photo of the badge was taken on the spot. It was then a true testimony of the present moment. And if not ... maybe the shoes, I really have a lot.

We had your cell phone number until 2003 ...
... what happened next?

Well, unfortunately, you won the Wimbledon tournament.
You see me sorry (laughs). But I hope you understand me. Today, it is perhaps 200 people who still know him.

You are in the middle of the grass season. Imagine that you are sensitive to hay fever ...
In Stuttgart, I saw a double player return to the locker room, with red eyes. He really seemed to suffer and I was sorry for him. I'm lucky not to be concerned!

What does the turf evoke?
I like its smell. It reminds me of the time when I played junior football.

Have you ever eaten grass like Novak Djokovic after his victory at Wimbledon?
In the proper sense, no. But figuratively, recently, I was bitten the grass in the first round of the Stuttgart tournament ...

Roger Federer during our interview: "It's Mirka who tastes the wine. She has a very good nose. I say rather if I like it or not. "
How often has your wife Mirka given you technical or tactical advice about your game?
On a technical level, not often. It helps me rather mentally. She immediately notices when I am stressed, and she does not hesitate to criticize me. She assists me especially in organizational matters. Even though I must say that Mirka is now more dedicated to her role as a mother, and that she is a little bit out of my daily activities. Which is also a good thing.

Do you still play tennis sometimes? After all, Mirka was also a professional player.
Yes, about five times a year. Especially during the holidays, when I want to play tennis again. In this case, Mirka intervenes at a moment's notice.

Does she still win a set against you?
Oh, no! (laughs). Anyway, we do not count the points.

You talk a lot about your children during your interviews ...
Because I am often asked about this subject ... (laughs)

However, we have nowhere read the answer to this question: Do you want other children?
Certainly, this subject is not yet fully closed, but we will rethink it at the end of my career.

Who is scheduled for when?
I do not know. The current situation suits us. We are all happy and relaxed. We take great advantage of the time spent with our four children.

With whom can you best party in the world of tennis?
When I celebrate, I do it thoroughly. With Stan Wawrinka, I still have fun. With Seve Lüthi too. When he is in the mood, he loosens himself. I can not really say if the other players are revelers. We cross more on the tennis courts than on the dance floor.

Have you ever had a hangover on a piece of land after an evening?
On a tennis court, no. But after my victory at the 2005 US Open on Sunday in the final, I was not well for a few days. It was not super funny. I only found a relatively normal state on Thursday ...

In which film would you like to play the main role?
I do not see myself as an actor, even if I happen to appear in some commercials. You have to know its limits. Mine begin as soon as you have to learn a text by heart.

Do you master a musical instrument?
I began to learn the recorder, then I took piano lessons. Just yesterday, I played piano in front of the children.

Next week, Roger Federer is among the favorites at Wimbledon, which he has already won seven times!
You still know how to play?
Just a piece. I have practiced too little. Alas.

The music you prefer?
I grew up with electro music. Thanks to my former coach Peter Lundgren, I went on to rock, I listened to AC / DC, Metallica, Lenny Kravitz, and so on. I've seen them all live.
Currently, I often listen to pieces from the 1990s when I am at home. They immediately awaken in me memories of childhood.

Now you have to make a choice. Would you prefer to be Justin Bieber or Lady Gaga?
Since I do not know Lady Gaga very well, I prefer to say Bieber.

Do you prefer "Titanic" or "Terminator"?
I always told myself that I did not want to see "Titanic", this sentimental movie. But I looked at it and I admit it's a beautiful movie, really impressive.

Have you cried?
This scene where Leonardo DiCaprio slips in the water and does not go back is not very cheerful. But I choose Terminator. Like "Rambo", it is part of the cult movies that I often like to watch.

Can you imagine playing for seniors in interclubs, that is to say in the Swiss Interclub Championship, after your career? As Marc Rosset or Jakob Hlasek do?
I have already thought of it. And why not set up a team? This is not so aberrant. I could already play with the older kids today ... (laughs).

What do you say to journalists who were already talking about the fall of your career in 2009?
I understand them. Since I had won all the Grand Slam tournaments, the journalists had to renew themselves. One can speculate wonderfully on a retirement, and the subject remains inexhaustible as long as it did not take place.

Do you find yourself now in the fall of your career or in the third spring?
The third spring sounds a little better. But we'll see how long I can still play.
My admirers know that I will continue as long as I can, as long as I enjoy playing tennis and it will be compatible with my family life.
Everything that happens to me now is only a bonus to me, especially after my 18th Grand Slam title, which many did not believe I could
win.

contest
Great prizes to win!
With the kind support of the Roger Federer Foundation, we put in play, as main prize, a signed racket of the Master. Caps and t-shirts, signed, are also to be won.

Normal Interview with STERN

Post by LaRubia Sat Jul 01, 2017 6:00 pm

There is a long interview with Roger in the current edition of German newsmagazine STERN which I found worth to translate:

„No compromises“

Roger Federer is one of the biggest athletes of today. Being 35 he wants to win Wimbledon once more. Like always at his side: Wife Mirka and the 4 kids. How peak performances and duties of being a father go together he tells to STERN

By Matthias Schneider

Mr. Federer, no player on the ATP tour travels with a similiar group to 15 persons around the world. In Wimbledon you will be a whole team again: Your wife Mirka, twin daughters Charlene and Myla, 7 years, and your twin sons Leo and Lenny, 3. Adding to this your coaching team. How can you concentrate in such a dovecote on a Grand Slam tournament?

First of all we rent a few houses in Wimbledon, for my coaches, my parents, friends, my manager. The family sleeps under one roof though. I stay of course with my wife Mirka and the children.

Do you sleep alone?

No, with my wife of course. Beside that we will have probably 2 of the 4 kids with us in the same room. Most likely the girls will sleep with us.

And what will be in case suddenly in the night before a semifinal there is a row in the sleeping room because someone got sick?

Then it is like that. I have already slept with 6 persons in one room during a whole tournament. Sometimes it's not possible to organize it differently.

Have your children ever cost you the night before a final?

Yes, in Paris Bercy. Indoors. At the end of the season. I didn't felt well and had the sniffles. The boys were with us in the room and also didn't felt well. They were sick, the little one had to throw up, was awake all the time. At 2 a.m. Mirka said: I have to take Leo – or was it Lenny? Oh no, it were the girls! I have to take her with us into the bed. I said: I have a final tomorrow. My wife: What shall I do? So I said: Ok, let's take her in, hopefully she sleeps well. I won the final...

With such activities you are prone to get something with the back.

I already blocked my back when I took one of the children out of the bed.

Is calmness in extreme stress like a Grand Slam not a fundamental meaning?

Yes. That's why I try to prepare in the weeks before the tournament. Not that I really bank sleep in advance but I want to get in a good rhythm: 9 hours of sleep in the night, uninterrupted of course, not to get woken by in the morning when usually the first kids awake at 6, 7. It is important that I am in a good rhythm and feel well in the second week of Wimbledon. That has to be the goal.

How do you manage 4 kids during the Wimbledon tournament?

The organisation is of course essential, especially the support of my wife who is responsible for all this. She says: I'm ready to pack 20 bags for everyone. We are experienced now and know where to get back with the children. In the beginning everything was new and took a lot of energy out of us with the stress.

But you don't have to know for example which kid still has to take the nosedrops.

I live after 2 to 3 clocks. There is my plan, then the one of the girls and the boys. Of course I know that Mirka is going from one to the other. The girls are doing homeschooling, the boys are just having fun. Mirka is the so-called quarterback of the whole family. My coaches, physio, fitness trainer are also helping out when there is something with the family.

Doesn't such a big field kit sometimes bug you?

No, quite the contrary. We are all good friends and enjoying it. For Mirka and myself was clear that we don't want it that I'm always alone on the road and that she is alone at home. That wouldn't make us happy. In the beginning when she was still playing we were seperated for one month, then 2 weeks and  eventually we noticed that we don't want to be without the other when it isn't necessary. We just like to spend time together, that is important for us as we like each other and are used to it.

Isn't all the travelling not stress for the children?

The girls are really enjoying it. They always want to join me when I say that I'm leaving.

Sure, before they go to school they prefer it to be on the road.

They have already been to a school to experience the group dynamics in a class together with teachers. They should see how to behave there. At home it is different. There suddenly their father appears and they call: Dad, come quickly! And then the father comes, just in the middle of the math class. Sometimes I think: Hm, this is surely a bit different as when I was in school.

As you doesn't seem to age as an athlete the girls will probably never get to see a school from inside.

(smiles) They will for sure still go to school when I quit playing tennis.

In Switzerland?

Yes. The goal is that they grow up in Switzerland.

What is your part in the education?

With the girls I did extremely much. Changing the nappies, bathed, helped during the night but with the boys I noticed that I can't keep up. I spent too much energy. I have for example for the years 2010 and 2011 when the children were 1 and 2 years old no memory of my tennis but only about the kids.

Psychologists like to speak about a good work-life-balance then.

True but in the long run I couldn't keep up with it anymore and had to step aside a bit. To put them to bed, to bath – all this is bad for the back. Today I rather go outside with the kids, hiking, into museums, having a Barbeque, that's more my thing.

Do you have rather flat or steep hiearchies in the Federer house?

It's important that the children have a bon ton. Respect towards other children and adults. That they know when they have to behave. But they should stay children as long as possible. They have to be serious for such a long time in the future – at school, at work. You are a grown-up for a very long time but I'm more a fan of staying young. They should enjoy life.

You once said that you want to live normal. But your children live in a cocoon of nannies and private teachers. Where does the normality then come from?

Once I come home from my travels we can actually live a rather normal calm life. The Swiss respect my privacy. They are very proud that I always like to come home to Switzerland. So there is really no need for a cocoon.

You are also outside of Switzerland probably the current most popular individual athlete. No matter if you play in the final of Melbourne or in the USA – the people want to see you win. Can you explain this to yourself?

That is also for me sometimes difficult to understand. I often don't know how popular I really am.

You can't be serious!

Ok, you notice it. I have never really sought that I would be loved. I have always tried it in a natural way, for example with my Fair Play. Some maybe want it to much to be loved. Maybe it's also my calm manner – that I'm Swiss. Success also helps of course. I have often played in front of big crowds and probably behaved well enough. People maybe say: He is a good role-model for my children. That is also a snowball effect.

There were many polite dominators but they weren't really loved.

Then name me the reason.

May it be because the people still feel your kiddy joy of the game and because you can't hide your vulnerability on the court in many situations despite all your coolness? That makes you approachable.

That's true, I cried after matches I won and lost. People see what it means to me, they believe it when I say: I love tennis. In hindsight I'm glad that I showed those emotions which I went through. I know how I felt when I cried in 2009 after the final with Rafa on the Center Court. In that moment itself I felt embarrassed though.

You recently said that you hope your popularity wouldn't keep that high as it is now. This sounds  coquettish if I may say so.

What I meant was that I will be happy when things get calmer about my person. Of course I like to be central once in a while but not the whole time.

When you appeared in October together with „Vogue“ boss Anna Wintour at the Fashion Week you seemed to enjoy the red carpet.

That's right. But it was only 2 days at a stage in which I didn't play for 10 weeks. I need my restfulness to stay mentally on the ground. For me this balance between repose and crazyness is extremely important. Otherwise I come to a tournament and think: Oh no, fans again, sponsors, media, pressure. I would burn out and have to be very cautious in this regard.

Most of the tennisplayers on the tour complain after 10 years how tiring all this travelling is. You on the other hand still seem to enjoy it even after 19 years.

It is like that. I have friends in every town, at every tournament. I'm a returning guest. With tennis it is like that the game changes all the time. That's why I enjoy every point and every situation in each match. The work on the geometry of the court never stops. Every ball comes different and has to be returned differently.

So for you it's more about the game itself instead of winning or losing?

Win or loss is still the reason why I'm here.

Can you imagine to continue to travel even without the prospect of winning a Grand Slam?

No, I don't think so. I would still play, like club tennis in Switzerland or a Charity Match here and there. When I can't keep up anymore, when the body doesn't want anymore the moment will come that I will ask myself if it's still worth it.

For some experts this moment already arrived when you celebrated your 30th birthday...

...I have to correct this. It already happened after I won the French Open in 2009, when I was 28...

… You still managed to reached semifinals and finals at Grand Slam but the player who dominated was Novak Djokovic. When you had to undergo surgery on your knee last year when you were 34 years old and went away from the tour for 6 months this seemed to be the beginning of the end for outsiders. No player ever returned back to the top that late in his career. What made you believe in it?

To be honest: I don't know myself how I managed to do it. It was a total shock that I was able to win the Australian Open in January. When I had this 9 month break after playing through for 17 years I asked myself: Do I really have to do this? But then I said to myself: After 20 years you are allowed to take some time off. Maybe the body needs it. The body also deserves to have this rest.

So you didn't felt a general mental tiredness?

I have always took some rest, even during my best years. I'm still motivated. I still believe that I can achieve a lot.

Since your break you are playing way more courageous – more offensive. Did your injury also free you from excessive expectations?

Maybe it was like that. I think that the injury was a reset. I couldn't look into the mirror and say: The goal has to be to win Grand Slams and to be #1 in the world. I was on crutches back then. The attitude was: I'm happy when I can return to the tour at all.

You played more freely because of that?

Yes, you can say this. I didn't had any expectations and felt that people believed that.

For a long time you only seemed to play against your own superlative. If you would become biggest athlete of all time, worlds sport athlete or best tennisplayer ever. Did this sometimes hinder you?

I felt the pressure and also that I could only disappoint the people. When I wouldn't win the French Open, when I wouldn't break the Grand Slam record, when I wouldn't win a Grand Slam title in one year I would be the loser. That went to dimensions which I didn't feel normal anymore.

Does the competition feel diffent today as 10 years ago?

Totally different. I enjoy it way more. In earlier times it was more like: red carpet, next tournament, packing, next tournament, surface change, everything was so quick.

Do losses taste less bitter today?

Absolutely.

Because you have nothing to prove anymore?

I can just better judge why I lost. Bad luck, wrong tactic, played poorly. In former times the question why I lost followed me way longer.

How long?

24 hours. I never carried it that long with me. I was always very sad, not angry, but very sad. Nowadays it is 10 minutes, that's it. I can easily put it away.

Now you are going again as the top favorite into the tournament in Wimbledon after having also won in Indian Wells and Miami after the Australian Open. You skipped the whole clay season...

… no compromises. Wimbledon is the goal of the year. I don't have any physical problems, can go on full power.

There it is again, the pressure of the old days and therefore the danger to cramp.

At the grass tournament in Stuttgart it already happened a little bit. When it mattered I couldn't play freely. That can happen unfortunately.

Your rival Rafael Nadal is full of self-confidence after his victory at the French Open. You have to be worried.

Not at all. He has shown me: When you have a goal you can achieve it – and my goal is Wimbledon. In Melbourne, Indian Wells and Miami I actually only wanted to find back into the tour. Now the season really starts for me.

Which big goals do you have?

To win tournaments.

20 Grand Slam titles would be a number for eternity...

That's not my drive.

And when it is over once, what should come then?

Much Switzerland, much family. Then I would like to see myself in tennis, for sure in business. I want to concentrate more on my foundation for the benefit of children. In April we collected 3,8 Million Swiss Francs in charity matches.

Mr. Federer, a big question at the end: Is there a kind of legacy for what you want to be remembered?

(has to think) I always took it serious also to be a role-model for children. I think I have shown that you don't have to really change with success.

La Rubia, thank you for that great interview. I never tire of hearing Roger's views. I am amazed by his honesty and his courage in saying Wimbledon, Wimbledon, Wimbledon. I can't think of anything else either.

This is such a sweet interview with Tom Rinaldi. I wish it was on Youtube.

Thank you, Doris. Only sorry I cannot see the video, not allowed in "my region".

Try this link maybe.... It says that Vnomera is a public server, but don't know if that makes it available outside the country?

Tennis.com is doing a week of special features about Roger's connection to NY as seen through the eyes of celebrities and close confidants.

One person they interviewed was Paul Annacone who gave an inside look at what it was like being part of Roger's team etc.

An interview with Charles Curtis for USA Today, done post Mercedes Benz clinic.  The interview centred around what he had learned in his 6 months off.  Interesting read - The bus is due to be picked up post US Open!!!  (delay from RG due to tires apparently)
