It was a great evening, with some real fun tennis. Thanks for the vid and photos, Dinora! Love Eyes

Roger finally realized his long-time dream to play in South Africa, in his mother's homeland. I think he will be pleased with the outcome. He was a bit emotional at the end, it did mean a lot to him. But I think his mother was even more excited than Roger! Sunny

Roger receiving a Springboks jersey from Siya Kolisi at the start of the match...

Last year, Roger had recorded a video in support of the South African rugby team who ended up winning the 2019 World Cup.

Kolisi shares something that is close to his heart with Roger - Helping poor children. Kolisi knows first hand the needs in his own country, since he grew up in the impoverished Zwide township outside Port Elizabeth and endured a tough upbringing.

In January, the BBC wrote: "This week, in one of South Africa's poorest communities, work starts on a new rugby field for children to play on. On its own, the field at Mbekweni Youth Centre near Cape Town might not feel very significant. But for South Africa's first black rugby captain, Siya Kolisi, it's the start of something.

Two months on from his side's World Cup victory, the 28-year-old believes his work off the pitch is becoming as important as his work on it."

Rafa received a jersey as well.

It was a simply super evening, and thanks to TTV (and I heard to Eurosport) for showing it!!

What wonderful people Roger and Rafa are and all those other players who do all they can to help others. A joy to see Bill and Trevor too! The doubles was such fun and the singles, well it was Roger and Rafa and who could ask for more, the two tennis superstars!

Nice to see Roger looking so happy. Very Happy Thanks Cromar and everyone who posted pics, clips etc.  Glad Roger won, although it was merely an exhibition match, and I imagine he and the spectators had plenty of fun while raising lots of money for his Foundation.

I wasn't able to watch the live broadcast of the match.  But checking the TV schedule yesterday, I found that there's an hour-long highlights programme on Eurosport 2 at 7pm this evening, for viewers in the UK.  In fact, I flicked to Eurosport about an hour ago and caught literally the last minute of the said highlights programme - which was scheduled for that time on their TV schedule, either yesterday or today.  Not surprising with Eurosport and their fictional schedule!  Anyway, I hope the highlights programme scheduled for this evening doesn't disappear from their listing and actually does get broadcast.

Jon Wertheim's interview with Robbie Koenig about the Match for Africa. Very nice listening.

https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/beyond-the-baseline/id1005210315

I have been travelling so I missed all the news around the AO final. To be honest, if Thiem had won, I would have made it my business to read more. Anyway, I was not aware that Djokovic's victory was overlooked by the general media and that the Tennis attention swung very quickly to Cape Town (as mentioned by Wertheim and Koenig in the podcast).  I certainly don't feel sorry for Djokovic and I remember a remark he made in the Jim Courier interview after the AO SF with Fed. Courier asked Djokovic if he had improved because of Roger and Nadal and Djokovic's instinctual and unfiltered response was "I hope I have made them better than they have made me better". Or something like that. This is the poor guy's world view. What can one do? He really does define himself by the other so he can never be satisfied.

As far as total number of GS are concerned I hope neither Nadal or Djokovic win another one.

Interesting interview with Godsick: A personal look at behind the scene of the Match in Africa and the pressure felt by Roger.

TONY GODSICK, THE MAN BEHIND ROGER FEDERER

The American opens up about February's record-attended Match For Africa, and the uncharted waters his client experienced by playing Rafael Nadal in his mother's native country.

By  Ed McGrogan | Tennis.com

April 22, 2020

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal recently set a world record for the largest attended tennis match. The man behind the moment—Federer’s agent, Tony Godsick—explains how it happened, and what’s next.

WHAT WAS THE GENESIS FOR TAKING THE SIXTH EDITION OF THE MATCH FOR AFRICA TO CAPE TOWN?

Roger always wanted to play a match in South Africa, his mom’s home country, while he was still playing professionally. We had held Match for Africas in Zurich, Madrid, Seattle and San Jose, but it made the most sense to do one in the country that Roger’s foundation supports most of all.

We got talking seriously about it over the last eight years. We started asking ourselves the necessary questions: When could we do this? When is the right time? What would it look like? The tennis schedule is so difficult to navigate.

From the onset, we always knew who Roger wanted to play against, whenever the event actually happened: Rafa. If I’m going to play in my mom’s country for the first time, Roger told me, it has to be against my biggest rival.

About two years ago is when it really started to come to fruition. We looked at our schedule and Rafa’s, and where the match could work out. I’d say a year ago we got the word that February, after the Australian Open, would be the time.

But there was more to it than that. One of the reasons Roger still plays tennis today is the rush and excitement of competing in front of some of the biggest crowds on the biggest stages around the world. South Africa doesn’t have that much infrastructure in terms of indoor facilities, so I threw out the idea of playing outdoors—and going after a world record. We had to check the weather forecast, because if there was a pattern of rain in February in Cape Town, then outside was a no-go.

From there, the event turned into a life of its own. Bigger was better, and we were aiming for over 50,000 fans. But we needed to create a tennis experience inside a stadium that was built for the FIFA World Cup. How do you get the sightlines right? Do you raise the court so people can see it? What about VIP seats? Now those questions became necessary.

YOU’VE SPENT SO MUCH OF YOUR CAREER WITH ROGER. HOW WAS IT WORKING SO CLOSELY WITH RAFA DURING THIS PROCESS?

Carlos Costa —Rafa’s agent— and I worked together at IMG for years. I’ve known Rafa since he started out on tour, but because of the rivalry, we’ve all become close. And the relationship between Roger and Rafa has evolved to the extent where those two are really, really close. They’re fierce competitors on the court, and they always will be. But the minute the match is over—and even during the match—they have so much respect for each other. They’re always there for one another.

Roger is huge in South Africa because he has the passport. But with Nadal, we weren’t bringing in a second act. We were bringing in a global icon, someone who was just as big as Roger. The same goes for Trevor Noah, who, like Roger, is half-South African, half-Swiss. He was amazing. Not to mention Bill Gates.

Rafa flew in from Kuwait, and he played a great match. We had a nice private dinner the night before, and Rafa understood how much this meant to Roger. He understood that it was more than just a two-day fundraiser for Roger’s foundation—it was also a way to inspire a continent that is completely underserved from a tennis standpoint, and to inspire a new generation of players.

THE MATCH FELT LIKE ONE OF THE RARE, UNCHARTED WATERS ROGER HAS EXPERIENCED IN HIS CAREER. WHAT WAS HE THINKING BEFOREHAND?

He was excited, but he was really nervous. He knew he was the host, and everything that came along with that. He knew how much South Africa had followed him over the years. He had never played there, so there was a new kind of pressure. People bought tickets not to see a funny match, but to see Federer tennis. He said to me, “I can’t do that all of the time. I feel pressure to play the style of tennis people expect.” He wanted to play a great match. He also knew how much it meant to his family, especially his mom. We wanted to make sure everything was perfect that day, because it truly was a once-in-a-career opportunity. I think he was genuinely overwhelmed by everything.

Federer after the match: "This is so much more than just tennis. I really hope we can do it again. I hope Rafa can do it again one day, come back to this beautiful country. I’m so proud to have roots down here ... It really is so, so special." (Getty Images)

ROGER PLAYED DOUBLES WITH BILL GATES, BUT THEY’RE ALSO PARTNERS IN A PHILANTHROPIC SENSE.

Roger was inspired by Andre Agassi, and everything he did from a philanthropic standpoint. And now there’s Bill. This was the third Match for Africa Bill has done. He’s been so supportive of everything that Roger does from the philanthropic side, and he’s taught him so much. To have him and his team along was great.

What Bill and his wife Melinda are doing with their wealth is incredible. Roger’s foundation is a small foundation, relatively speaking, but he will have given away over $50 million by this year. I think Roger will want to continue to do these kinds of events and lead by example.

WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT FEDERER’S FUTURE IN TENNIS?

There are some players who walk out on court with earphones on. With Roger, you’ll never see him do that, because he wants to hear the crowd. That’s one of the things that fuels him to keep playing—the roar and the reaction. I believe he has a library in his mind where he files away those moments and feelings. That will not only allow him to have incredible memories for later, but it will allow him to push the envelope as it relates to how long he can stay out on tour. This is the motivation he needs—the biggest arenas, and the biggest crowds.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE MATCH FOR AFRICA SERIES?

We’ve built a franchise. We will continue to do more Matches for Africa, but we don’t have the next one planned yet. Obviously, we’ve set the bar very high. I don’t know if we want to consider breaking the record we’ve already set, but it’s all for a good cause. We’re still closing the books on Cape Town, but we will have raised over $3.7 million for the Roger Federer Foundation, and the projects it supports.

It’s also a great way for parts of the world to watch Roger that get don’t get to see him play a lot. Furthermore, these matches help spread the gospel of tennis, which we want to see grow everywhere.

I would imagine we’ll look to do another Match for Africa in the U.S. at some point, somewhere with a cool arena, in a city Roger hasn’t played in. Or maybe in Canada. We’ll keep trying to build it out and have fun with it. Hopefully we can pass it on to someone in the future, when Roger can’t play.

There will be more; this wasn’t the last one. But if it was, it would have been a great one to end on.

It is really good to have this insight from Mr. Godsick. How big an even this was and how much it meant to Roger is amazing, and how he felt "obliged" to bring the "Federer tennis", his top-notch take-your-breath away and the "I can't believe that shot" kind of tennis that only he can generate in his inimitable style.
To hear how Roger will want to play on is also meaningful to those who were concerned about this break in tennis because of the pandemic.
Thank you Mr. Godsick, and Go Roger! Go Fight
