Thanks Cromar. Indeed, stunning. Serena looks beautiful. I love her evening reception dress.
I also liked Serena's dusty pink outfit that she wore for the church ceremony. It seemed to be quite a popular colour choice among the women!

Re: 2018 General Tennis News
They are obviously serious about applying this new rule. It could be hard to swallow for those who genuinely develop problems during their first round, but it does protect the integrity of sport, overall, which is good.
Peter Gojowczyk Fined €25,000 For ‘Poor Performance’ At The French Open
The German No.3 finds himself in trouble with officials at Roland Garros following his first round exit.

Peter Gojowczyk (zimbio.com)
World No.43 Peter Gojowczyk failed to perform at the ‘required professional standard’ in his first round match at the French Open, according to the tournament referee.
The German has been fined 25,000 euros following his retirement in his first round match at Roland Garros. Gojowczyk was taking on Great Britain’s Cameron Norrie, but retired whilst trailing 1-6, 0-2, after 41 minutes of action. He said that his hip/groin area started to hurt during the first set.
Despite the seeming straightforward retirement, officials have stated that Gojowczyk should have instead withdrawn from his first round match in order for a lucky loser to step in. The 28-year-old came into the Grand Slam straight from the Geneva Open, where he reached the final of the tournament.
In recent months the Grand Slam Board have been working to address the problem of players deliberately playing in major tournaments despite being injured. Those ranked lower in the rankings, do so for the prize money.
At the start of this year, a new policy came into place. Lucky losers and players who withdraw prior to the tournament will now split the first round prize money. This year a total of eight players entered the draw as a lucky loser. Including Argentina’s Marco Trungelliti, who drove from Barcelona to Paris the day before his first match to play in the tournament.
“Any player who competes in the first round main draw singles and retires or performs below professional standards, may now be subject to a fine up to (the equivalent) first round prize money in 2018.” The new rule states.
Gojowczyk’s fine equates to 62.5% of the money he earned for playing in the first round at Roland Garros this year. Losers in the first round exit with 40,000 euros in their pockets.
It is not the first time this year a player has been fined for a poor performance in a major. At the Australian Open in January, Mischa Zverev was docked $45,000 for his performance against Hyeon Chung.

Good to hear from Andy, with 'some' positive news...
Andy Murray confident of Wimbledon chances but names
Roger Federer as favourite

Will Murray make it to Wimbledon? (Picture: PA)
Andy Murray is ‘getting closer’ to making a return to competitive tennis action, having spent nearly a year on the sidelines with a hip injury.
The three-time Grand Slam champion limped out of last year’s Wimbledon quarter-finals and hasn’t been seen on the ATP Tour since.
He attempted to make a comeback at the beginning of 2018 but suffered a setback and went under the knife, with the grass-court season always a target for his return.
There had been much speculation over his participation at Wimbledon but the two-time winner remains confident that he will make it.
He told Jaguar: ‘It’s been very slow, I’ve been out getting close to a year now – which is a lot longer than me or any of my team were expecting in the beginning but I’m getting closer to playing again.
Murray views Federer as the favourite (Picture: USA TODAY Sports)
‘I started training a few days ago and I’m hoping to make my comeback in the grass-court season.’
Discussing the tournament itself, he admitted he expects Roger Federer to defend his title and win a ninth crown at the All England Club.
‘I’m hoping I’ll be there but Roger Federer has obviously got a phenomenal record on grass – I think he’s won there seven times at Wimbledon so he’ll definitely be up there as one of the favourites,’ he added.
‘You never know, it depends a little bit on the draw.’
The Scot, whose ranking is set to drop outside the world’s top-150 the next time the ATP leaderboard is released, is due to compete in warm-up events in Rosmalen – which begins next week – and at Queen’s but it remains to be seen exactly when he will return to court.
Edit - Tuesday 5 Jun 2018 10:17 pm :
Andy Murray has made the unsurprising move to withdraw from a Wimbledon warm-up event the Libema Open in s-Hertogenbosch as he continues to step up his recovery from a hip injury.
The former world No. 1 had outlined his hopes to compete at the All England Club later this year earlier on Tuesday, but having just returned to practice, it seemed far-fetched that he would be fit enough to compete in Rosmalen. And he confirmed he had ditched his plans to play in the Netherlands.
‘It is with regret that I won’t be able to play,’ he said.

change
Compared to all the changes related to identity this seems very minor by comparison, if you know what I mean! Everything seems to be fluid these days,

Re: 2018 General Tennis News
So Cilic, "brilliant" defeated Kyrgios. I remember at the AO this year the comms quoted Roger as saying that Cilic is capable of playing high quality intense /\ennis......on occasion, and Christ Fowler added that it was just that Cilic hand't convinced him that he can do that regularly or more frequently. Yes, he won one GS, and Roger was down against him at Wimbledon in 2016? but Roger them played amazingly and fought so courageously and wih such spirit that he won that match.
Cilic has been playing better in many ways so he is still counting on getting himself into position to get into a final again. Apparently he played brilliantly against Kyrgios. Now, Kyrgios is the more talented, in my view, but Kyrgios, despite that, lacks some measure of steadiness. Otherwise he should win against Cilic. Is Kyrgios too much of a showman type of player? It is not a good habit: if he plays well, seriously, and makes his great shots and learns to set up strategy and tactics more consistently then he will impress rather than going on for "showy" stuff, as he will be showy in a different way but with better results.
And Djokovic..wants to join the winners circle and be like Federer and Nadal. Is he forcing it out of himself now for a while? I don't know.
Hope Murray gets well soon. It is hard to be away for so long. He can't afford to rely on his ball retrieval qualities that consistently but will have to bring in other qualities to his play, maybe.

Re: 2018 General Tennis News
I haven't felt with most of the players that great devotion for playing tennis. It is one thing to be devoted to it to win, and quite another to simply love the game and live it. It is the same with the younger generation. I do think that quality makes the difference, all other things being the same: the thing is, all other things are usually not quite the same, anyway.

Re: 2018 General Tennis News
Re docking players' salary for poor performace during first rounds it is, I believe. There is some sense to this, since the prize money for those rounds has been increased. Started during Roger's spell with the Player's Council
By the way, I haven't heard a thing about the Player's Council for ages. Does it still exist? I hope so. It was good when Roger was on it, and the players should not let that opportunity to wield some influence get out of their hands.
Regarding those who try to take advantage, it is correct for them to be fined if indeed it is true that they are not trying. On the other hand, I remember Davydenko, who always played and played all out, and the called him something like the Ironman, once being warned about trying more during a match. He almost teared up, or did a little.
It was not fair. At that time there was talk of gambling or people wanting others to throw matches and so on, or offering them incentives. That is the reason when Davydenko wasn't having a great day that he was warned. But it was out of character for him totally to be like that. So I felt bad for him, and thought that they did him an injustice and insulted him.
So a distinction has to be made. There are times when a player inexplicably just can't feel the ball, when he is "off" for some reason not even known to himself. It is inevitable that his happens to everyone at times.
Hello to Davydenko, and I hope he is doing well. He worked so hard, and played really well.

Re: 2018 General Tennis News
Ordinarily I would agree with you. Roger was quite young, not on the ATP tour yet when that happened, and even when he joined, there is a story of how he and other younger players like Roddick, Hewitt behaved. Roger and Hewitt cried on court when they played each other, swore, fought with the umpire and threw their racquets. But they were still young, younger, and haven't reached that level of success or ranking yet.ph∞be wrote:I think Roger will be the first to say that in his youth he, too, did not have discipline (remember the story of his father actually rubbing Roger's face in the snow to cool him off?)
May be I am too ready to try and hope for the goodness in people to come out but I am still hoping that Sascha will find his way as will Kyrgios. After all what Kyrgios said to Stan was really, really awful but we have moved on.
I have not forgotten what Kyrgios said. He is like to be provicative or offensive on and off again for his own reasons, be it a chip on his shoulder, or resentment at not doing better. Yes, what he said to Stan was beyond the pale: it would have been off the court too, but during a match...where is his mind? No judgment there.
Otherwise, yes, I hope people mature somewhat. They have to get beyond those early successes and being adored, some of them because it is a barrier. Genie with her Army, I thought, was like that. She had promise, and still does, but was overheralded and fussed over too much, and when she nearly won against Sharapova, or did she win but did not win the final, she fell off in her performance. I realize she had that unusual event, the concussion, but part of her issues were this overheralding and overexpectation and adulation.
Sascha, I am sure, impresses the young women who swoon over him. He too will have to grow up, and develop his steady quality and the ability to stand up and last.
