Nothing worse for a professional athlete than to watch everyone else do something you love just as much as them. It is the worst kind of hell and a loving family can only provide so much support. If he can ever play without surgery it would be better for him to avoid the ravages of arthritis. How he escapes deep depression over his situation is beyond me. What professional athletes endure is unimaginable.

It made me so sad to read Andy's message. So sad. I think there is still a comfort for him with his family. He has a good family, imo. Supportive and loving family. Their support will be essential for Andy to avoid deep depression. What a so bad situation! Sad

Talking about deep depression is maybe a bit... exaggerated ?? Rolling Eyes

Myself, I have a medicinal treatment against depression since 20 years, and I'm talking about "real" depression.
Yes, it's very hard for Andy, but trust me, there's a lot of peoples who would be glad to be in his shoes.

But that doesn't mean that his situation - and his post - are not affecting me.

Anyway, good luck to him, he's a really good fella, and I hope his health problems will be behind him very soon.

Sorry to hear that Murray will miss the AO. I just hope this hip issue doesn't end his career. It has for a few players, like Kuerten. I saw that Kei is also out. I guess Djoker is still questionable. I read that he plans to play a few exhos and then decide. I'm guessing Rafa and Stan will both play.

I find it so amazing that Roger is 5-7 years older than the other Big Four guys and yet he is the most fit. Yes, he had knee surgery and missed months last year, but his injury was a fluke off-court mishap. I'm just astounded at Roger's career fitness.

I am very sorry for Andykins. Not my favorite player at all - to watch - but somebody I like for his humour and his authenticity. I doubt he will come back on the court, I think his career is over, and I hope so much for him that he will find a lot of good things to happen in his life.

In this video, you can see that Andy has difficulties just walking, even while holding onto a cart. He is going home... That's really too bad!

Nishikori is also confirmed out of the AO, and others could follow, according to this article... The only healthy one is Roger! :

TheNational - Roger Federer looks set for a serene march to grand slam No 20 at Australian Open

"With Murray confirmed absent and Nadal, Djokovic and Wawrinka all major doubts, the defending champion should be regarded as the overwhelming favourite."

I was surprised to see Serena pull out. I mean, I would not have been surprised had she pulled out a few weeks ago before coming to Australia. But once she came and played the exho, I figured she was good to go. Wide open women's tournament again.

Not only does it look better that Andy's using a baggage cart for support, he moves faster than were he to be using a cane or, worse, crutches.

What a blow for Andy to have to pull out of the AO. The poor chap. I hope this hip injury can improve for him as he clearly still wants to compete if he can. His heartfelt message is so poignant and sweet.  The best of luck to him for a recovery to full fitness soon. Good luck

Good luck too to Kei and Stan. As for the other "doubts", I do not believe a word of it where RN and ND are concerned. Obviously, I have no evidence for my doubts other than my entrenched deep, deep, suspicion of them both - but evidence is overrated in my view and is neither here or there. Very Happy I expect them both to make a full and concerted effort for the AO title. Which is their job, so I won't hold it against them, much though it irritates me!

What a shame that Andy had to pull out of the AO. I hope he is able to recover from his hip injury and will be back on the court as soon as possible.

Andy had hip surgery today in Melbourne. Expects to return during the grass season.

I hope Andy feels well enough to play as long as he can. He says he wants to play so that Sophie (his daughter) can see him play- he says he he has seen other players bring their kids to the court and he wants that too- bless him.

Interesting that he got his operation in Melbourne, away from home... They must have a great doctor!

Apparently he's been in touch with the doctor in Melbourne since 2008 and felt very confident about him. He won't be 100% but he's hoping he will be fit enough to play at a high level.

Thanks ph∞be for the info.

I just read this article from Paul Newman (Independent), who was on the phone with Murray this morning, providing more details about Andy's operation by Dr John O’Donnell and his recovery and future plans: Andy Murray targets Wimbledon return after undergoing successful hip surgery in Melbourne.
