Re: 2018 ATP Rankings & Schedule
It's not going to be a cakewalk, that's for sure... 2000 points are never easy to defend! Should Roger not make it in IW, he will have a little reprieve in Miami, however, as Nadal will be dropping 600 points then.
Kemik outlined what he needs to do to remain No 1 until, at least, the Eternal city - I like that! (and maybe for eternity, then!! ) With his current form, I think it's quite doable.

Thanks for the information on how this could play out. It would really by annoying if Nadal becomes #1 again while injured. Ah well. Best thing to focus on is doing good in Indian Wells. With so many top players out, Roger could get a good draw until late in the tournament.

Here is the 'Round-by-Round' Ranking Points Chart for Indian Wells 2018.
The players are listed in the order of their 'Live' rankings, based on the points they will have at the start of the tournament, after deduction of last year points.

The remaining of the 32 seeds:
21 Kyle Edmund
22 Kei Nishikori
23 Hyeon Chung
24 Gilles Müller
25 Filip Krajinović
26 Damir Džumhur
27 Andrey Rublev
28 Feliciano López
29 David Ferrer
30 Pablo Cuevas
31 Philipp Kohlschreiber
32 Milos Raonic
(Also posted in the Indian Wells 2018 tournament thread).

Re: 2018 ATP Rankings & Schedule
Will Roger be No 1 after Miami?
Even with the withdrawal of Nadal from both IW and Miami, it will still be a challenge for Roger to maintain his No 1 ranking after IW or Miami, seeing that he has 2000 points to defend in total. After deduction of last year points for the two tournaments, Roger has a net deficit of 710 points in total over Nadal.
I have prepared a chart showing all the scenarios possible and what results Roger needs to remain No 1, either after IW or Miami. But in short, Roger will be No 1 after IW and/or Miami if he wins one of the two Masters, or gets to one Final and a QF, or two SF.
In which case, Roger would remain No 1 until Rome, at least, or even until Wimbledon if Nadal doesn't defend all his points during the clay season. Similarly, if Roger is not No 1 after Miami, he could regain the top ranking during the clay season. Nadal has very little room to manoeuver over that period, as Rome is the only tournament where he can make up points, having won all the others!

I'm guessing the Miami points from last year have dropped off.

Re: 2018 ATP Rankings & Schedule
Striker - If you are looking at the Live Ranking site, then yes, those are the Miami points that have already been taken off.
In Indian Wells, Roger dropped 1000 points and gained 600 points (Final), for a net loss of 400 points. He now has 9660 points on the official ATP rankings released today.
Although Roger is ahead of Nadal by 290 points at present, next week, Nadal will be loosing only 600 points from last year (vs Roger 1000), so Roger needs to reach at least the QF (180) in Miami to make up the gap.

Miami Open 2018 - 'Round-by-Round' Chart & Graph
'Round-by-Round' Chart and Graph - Miami Open 2018
The top 26 players are listed on the chart in order of their 'Live Ranking', namely their points at the start of the tournament, after deduction of the 2017 points they are defending. The top 32 seeds have a 'bye' in the first round.
Five out the top 26 are not playing in Miami, namely: Nadal, Thiem, Pouille, Wawrinka and Ramos Violas.
Roger as Nº 1?
After deduction of the points to defend, Roger is 110 points behind Nadal and therefore needs to reach at least the QF (as outlined in red on the chart) to retain his Nº 1 ranking after Miami. If he does, Roger will remain at the top until at least Rome, and maybe longer if Nadal doesn't defend all his titles on clay, i.e. Monte-Carlo, Barcelona, Madrid and RG (lots of points to defend/lose). If Roger wins Miami, he would be guaranteed to be Nº 1 until at least Halle, even if Nadal defend all his titles on clay.
If, for any reason, Roger didn't reach the QF! , he would be back to Nº 2 after Miami, but could regain the top ranking after Monte-Carlo, Barcelona or Madrid, if Nadal doesn't defend his titles there.
And if Roger were to decide to play any of the clay tournaments, his chances for an extended stay at the top of the rankings would be further enhanced.

Re: 2018 ATP Rankings & Schedule
HI>>>I was wondering if the same holds true. Roger can still be back to 1 if Rafa loses any of his clay matches or it was only this one? Thanks

Re: 2018 ATP Rankings & Schedule
Striker: It's true for the whole clay season... Nadal being only 100 points ahead of Roger, he practically has to defend all his points from last year to stay at the top of the ranking.
He can only afford to 'lose' a maximum of 99 points during the clay season, meaning that, like last year, he will need to win Barcelona, Madrid and RG again, and make at least 90 points (R16) in Rome, having reached the QF there last year (180 points).
If he doesn't, then Roger will be back to No 1 until the Grass season. But then the situation will be reversed, with Roger having to defend 2500 points, and Nadal only 180 points!

Roger back to No 1
Roger is officially back to No 1 as of today
Since Nadal didn't defend his title in Madrid (was defeated by Dominic Thiem in the QF), Roger is officially back to No 1 as of today. He now has a 720-point advantage over Rafa, who would need to win Rome to reclaim the top ranking. If Nadal doesn't win Rome, Roger will stay No 1 until Halle, at least.
Federer has broken his own record: returning to No. 1 at age 36 years and 279 days. He is still - and perhaps for all time - the oldest reigning singles No. 1 since tennis computer rankings began in 1973 pic.twitter.com/IPVOXzquPS
